授業概要 The goal of this course is to improve students’ daily and academic spoken and listening English communication abilities. Students learn to analyze and express their opinions about an issue of their choice by focusing on conversation and discussion strategies and roles in pair and group work as well as a language focus on vocabulary, collocations, and idioms.
授業のねらい・到達目標 By looking at various academic issues (e.g., education or the environment), students are able to:
- Express their opinions on the issues(A-6-1)
- Agree and disagree with other students’ opinions(A-3-1)
- Improve their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills(A-2- 1)
- Improve their confidence when communicating in English.(A-3-1)

授業の形式 演習
授業の方法 The content and language-integrated learning method focuses on pair and group work to brainstorm and share ideas before choosing a topic for the academic task. Students analyze a particular issue from four levels (i.e., background, problem, solution, and opinion). Students spend one-hour completing preparation for each class.

Feedback will be provided in class or online when assignments are returned.

・以下の条件を満たす2年生以上の学生
(1)過去に「英語1/2/3/4」を受講したが、単位取得できなかったD評価の学生。
(2)英文学科以外の学生。
・受講希望者が定員を超過した場合、初回授業時に人数調整をする。履修の許可を得た上で、履修登録をすること。

1 Re-introduction. We will spend this first meeting getting to know each other again, the contents of the course, and the textbook.

教科書 Curtis Kelly and Arlen Gargagliano, Writing from Within 2:Writing from Within, Cambridge, 2011, 2 edition
Each unit of the textbook has pair, group, and individual activities that will give students chances to talk with each other and put their ideas in writing. The book also has exercises and model paragraphs to guide students toward writing their sentences and paragraphs. The book has space for writing and the teacher will bring paper to each class to allow students to create a portfolio for each student.
