授業概要 This course explores modern Japanese history and culture with the overarching questions of "What Does it Mean to be Japanese?" and "What is Japan's place in the world?" We will explore these questions through various points in Japanese history, from the Meiji Restoration to the early 20th century to the postwar era and on to the present day.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The aim of this course is to gain an overview of modern Japanese history and culture by reading and analyzing short primary source historical documents in English translation, short stories, and brief academic texts. Students will gain a deeper understanding of modern Japanese history and the many ways that "Japaneseness" has been defined and questioned in politics, literature, and culture. Students will learn how to critically approach and question preconceived notions and stereotypes about Japanese history, culture, and identity.

歴史的資料、短編小説などを英語で読み、日本の近代歴史と文化における日本アイデンティティーを考える。
