授業概要 This course will explore various narrative contents of the first extant book of Japan, the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), with a focus on its mythological components. The early passages from the book will be examined and discussed in a transdisciplinary approach, which includes mythology, philology, history and anthropology.
Before examining Kojiki myths in detail, an introductory session will be dedicated to describing the historical context of the book, its narrative structure, language peculiarities, and the polemics surrounding its authorship and authenticity. From the second session on, the focus will be placed on the different myth narratives, explaining their contexts, actors, and the meaning of each passage within the rest of the book. We will provide comparisons with similar sections from coetaneous texts such as the Nihon shoki, and, when applicable, descriptions of similar myths from other geographical areas. Further, in the interest of enhancing the understanding of the original narrative, we will discuss philological details as well.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students are expected to gain a basic knowledge of the narrative of early Kojiki myths and to recognize their importance in present-day Japanese culture. Another goal of this course is for students to grasp the differences and similarities of Kojiki passages with overseas myths. In doing so, they will perceive the ubiquity of some mythical motifs and narratives.
Moreover, they are expected to understand, at least in a broad sense, the difficulties, ambiguities and misunderstandings generated by writing a Japanese book with the ideographic writing system of Chinese, a language whose syntax and morphology are completely different from those of Japanese.
