授業概要 The main purpose of Academic English 1 is to improve students' abilities in the following: reading, understanding, and deploying the main concepts of linguistics; reading, analyzing, and interpreting literary works; writing academic essays; reading and evaluating classmates' writing; listening to lectures; leading and participating in discussions; and giving academic presentations. Academic English 1 introduces academic writing skills in the first seven weeks, then it introduces students to the rudiments of linguistics . The semester is divided into the Writing Unit, and the Linguistics Unit.
授業のねらい・到達目標 1) To become able to understand the information and opinions according to the purpose by reading a variety of genres/topics of English. These will include expository essays on linguistics concepts.(A-3-1、A-6-1、A-7-1、A-8-1)
2) To become able to write English according to the purpose, contexts, and situations about a variety of topics, for example, the branches of linguistics, studying abroad, child development, and American culture. (A-3-1、A-6-1、A-7-1、A-8-1)
3) To become able to perform integrated language activities. These may include vocabulary, grammar exercises, and interpreting content through discussions, oral presentations, and essays(A-3-1、A-6-1、A-7-1、A-8-1)

授業の形式 演習
授業の方法 Students learn the basics of paragraph writing and format, with an emphasis on unity and coherence by completing exercises in the textbook. They also learn linguistics concepts, complete related task-based activities, write a 150-word paragraph, and give a three-minute oral presentation. Students are supposed to spend 1 hour to complete preparation and homework on each class. Feedback will be provided in class or online when assignments are returned. For students who live abroad, far away from the campus, or permitted by CHS or departments they belong to, or permitted by class teachers, please complete assignments on Blackboard given each week.

事前に授業担当教員に許可された者については、代替措置として、Blackboard に配信する課題を提出する。そのほか詳しいことは状況に応じて別途指示する。

Students’ participation will be measured through their ability to consolidate their understanding of the lecture through oral reactions at the end of class.
Complete assignments on Blackboard given each week.
対⾯授業に参加できない場合の条件を満たし遠隔で参加した場合、課題の提出によって評価する。
小テストや授業内試験を受けられない場合、Blackboardを介した課題提出によって評価する。期日については都度、Blackboardで告知する。
