授業概要 Introduction to the regional geography of Japan
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course is intended to provide a geographical overview of Japan to those who are unfamiliar with Japan's regional geography. An overall picture will be presented by looking at Japan’s natural environment and historical, social, economic, and cultural features. Students will be able to acquire the following knowledge: the diversity of Japan’s natural environment, the regional distribution of socio-economic activities, and major challenges faced by Japan and the Japanese in the 21st century.

Students will be able to: understand the geographic, systemic way of thinking and geographic methods (A-1-1), understand the regional characteristics and the overall picture of Japan (A-2-1) and to think from the local/global perspective (A-1-1).
この科目は文理学部(学士(地理学))のDP及びCPDP1, DP2, CP1, CP2に対応しています。
授業の形式 講義
授業の方法 Lectures are given in the classroom and lecture materials are provided via Blackboard. A short assignment is given before each lecture. Based on the assignment, the topic is discussed at the beginning of each week's lecture. A research paper on a selected topic needs to be completed by the end of the semester. Feedback will be provided via Blackboard.
Students not able to attend face-to-face lectures are supposed to study by themselves using lecture materials provided via Blackboard. Questions will be answered by e-mail.
履修条件 The course will be conducted in English, so students are expected to have a suitable level of English (IELTS 5.5/CEFR B2 recommended)

1 Introduction: The Geographical approach:
Geographical method and approach will be explained in order to study Japan. (A-1-1、A-2-1)

成績評価の方法及び基準 レポート(40%)、授業内テスト(60%)
Students who cannot attend face-to-face lectures are supposed to submit short assignments (60%) and a research paper (40%).
