授業概要 | How did Japanese culture change when Japan opened to foreign influences in the 19th century? In what ways did the images associated with Japan in the West impact the Japanese modern identity? In this class, we explore the cultural and artistic exchanges between Japan and the rest of the world that characterized the Meiji era. We discuss themes such as Orientalism, Japonism, colonialism, and cosmopolitanism, in order to understand how "Japanese-ness" came into shape in modern Japanese culture. |
授業のねらい・到達目標 | Students should achieve a general understanding of the historical context of the Meiji era. They should understand and be able to discuss: (1) Japan's paradoxical position within the paradigm of Orientalism; (2) The influence of Japanese art on Western worldview; (3) The redefinition of Japanese identity in the Meiji era and its relevance today. (A-2-2, A-3-2, A-6-2). |

授業の方法 | Students learn to read texts in English and communicate on the topic. Via Blackboard, students have access to reading materials and PowerPoint slides and need to submit short assignments every 2 weeks (quizzes and short essays on the reading materials). Students need to attend the in-person classes and participate in the live discussions. The final essay also needs to be submitted via Blackboard. |
