This course, English Communication, will allow students to use the English they have already studied as well as learn new vocabulary and more challenging grammatical structures. There will be a variety of in-class methods of study to keep the learning fresh and ever-changing. While there is a required textbook (Interchange 1), this book will probably be used only about half the time. There will be a number of speaking tasks to get the students talking and putting the target language to use. Audio challenges and video viewing will occasionally test the students. Various puzzles and word tasks will supplement the textbook’s target structures. Students will be graded mainly on participation, task completion and the final exam. Class format - Partly online. 8 classes in person, 7 classes online.
授業概要 While there is a textbook for this course, it will be just a small part of the in-class method. We will use the textbook between 30% and 60% of each lesson. Most lessons will begin with a challenge that the students are seeing for this first time. This challenge could be a word quiz, a puzzle or a brief in-class research task. Next we will almost always transition into a speaking activity. This task will usually feature language and topics pertinent to the textbook structures of the day. Depending on the day, the students may have one partner or find themselves in a small group. From there we will begin the textbook related activity. This portion will include some brief reading, some conversation sketches and a listening activity. From there we will put the textbook target structures to use via speaking but occasionally with a writing task. At the end of the class we will do one final wrap-up activity which reviews the main points and checks that the students understood the point of the lesson. Most classes will almost always follow such a pattern. There will be a final exam at the end of the term and random mini-tests and speaking quizzes to keep things fresh.

授業の方法 演習形式
The main methods will text, pair work and reports. For self-study there will be homework that is assigned in conjunction with the textbook. The homework will not always be submitted and checked on a weekly basis, rather it will often be handed in for review at the end of the semester. In addition to the textbook related tasks, there will be reports and readings that pertain to the topics and structures covered in the textbook and in class. Students are also required to preview each chapter on their own before each class. Not being prepared for the class will have repercussions as it hampers pair work activities. Reports assigned will cover such topics as biographies, geography, music, Japanese prefectures and book/movie reviews. NOTE - For students who cannot attend in-person classes: Assignments and tasks will be found on the Blackboard. All tasks must be submitted in a timely manner. Homework will also be done in the textbook.
