授業概要 This is a literature course aimed at students who want to be English teachers, although it will also appeal to students with other ambitions. We will contemplate two big questions: Why do we read literature, and what can we learn from literature? Some may answer that literature is a way to escape from ‘real life’, or is a ‘high culture’ preoccupation. Literature is also seen as ‘special’, something like a religion, or a kind of magic, that is above or outside of regular ways of thinking and seeing the world. In another view, literature is part of politics because it criticizes society and ideology and history and so on. Conversely, some see it as purely aesthetic, ‘art for art’s sake’. Some think literature supports the status quo; others believe literature can enlighten and transform society for the better. Then there are those who think that studying literature is a waste of time. They think students, especially children, should study more ‘practical’ subjects. As for studying English, many think literature is not as important as grammar and communication.

This is strange, as literary expression has always been a part of human life. Humans have always used language to tell stories and express themselves. In this class, we will explore the many possible uses of literature, but not just for practical purposes. We will expand the meaning of ‘useful’ to include why studying literature can be of great benefit, both for improving English and for other areas of life. We will not read literature as an object that must be ‘studied’ for information. Rather, we will actively participate in exploring ways of reading, analyzing, and enjoying literature as a part of life, rather than as something extra and unimportant. Whether we are reading and discussing novels or films, in each class we will reflect on how and why we are reading, and what benefits we are getting.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The overall aim of this course is to explore a variety of ways in which we can put literature to use as a way to learn about language, society, and ourselves. Students who successfully compete the course will be able to, in English,
• understand the conflicts, themes, and structures of the course texts
• discuss critical and interpretive responses to the above
• understand relationships between social change, and literary/cultural representation
• read fiction with minimal recourse to a dictionary
• give short presentations on how to teach the course texts
• incorporate literature into English education
• write a thesis-based essay using textual evidence to support an argument
授業の方法 演習
Students should spend about three hours a week doing the reading and writing assignments. Every week we will have a discussion on Zoom, starting at 13:00. In the first ten weeks, we will read and discuss Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel An Artist of the Floating World. In the following two weeks, we will watch and discuss Stanley Kubrick’s film Dr. Strangelove. In addition to readings and discussions, students will give a teaching presentation and write a final essay.
