This course builds academic writing skills from the paragraph to the essay level. The content for writing topics is current issues of students’ interest (e.g., their lives, global warming or the digital divide) and in the fall semester various types of academic writing are looked at (i.e., opinion reports, literature reports and short information technology essay).

授業概要 The goal of this course is to develop students’ writing ability to:
- Write paragraphs, reports and short essays using various writing genres
- To analyze and research their chosen topics using various online media sources
- To develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students do online research to analyze the issues of their interest, discuss their research in pairs or small groups and then write about them to explain their opinions on the issues. Each class introduces a writing target (e.g., thesis statements or topic sentences), and students evaluate their writing progress. Students also learn to use Blackboard to develop their academic writing skills.
