授業の形態 This course may be taught on-campus face to face if the public health conditions permit it. If not, the course will continue online and through zoom. Subsequently, much of the communication will be done through the Blackboard system of the school.

授業概要 The course is a continuation of the one that started in the spring term. The focus is on further strengthening students’ communication ability. In addition to the target skills of listening and vocabulary acquisition, students are introduced to more advanced elements of reporting and speechmaking.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Able to write short reports;
Able to carry out a conversation in English;
Able to use advanced elements of speechmaking;
Able to express personal views on daily topics of common interest (personal skills, environmental protection, future plans);
この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。
授業の方法 演習
Individual units of the textbook are completed within one class session. Speaking activities are done in small groups to encourage active participation. Speeches are designed to reinforce the target skills that are being studied; while mirroring both the themes and the language patterns of the textbook. And students spend a minimum of 60 minutes per week for preparation and homework.
履修条件 ①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。
②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、外国語教育センターで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。
③「英語1」(前期)と「英語2」(後期)は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。
④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。
授業計画
1 The Art of Arguing an Opinion
Students practice how to present a personal opinion with supporting reasons.
【事前学習】Print and read through the syllabus of the Fall term; (30 minutes時間)

2 Unit-9: Looking Good
Students work in groups to talk fashion. They also practice complimenting people.
【事前学習】Do the listening sections of unit-9 (pp. 55, 58); (40 minutes時間)
【事後学習】Do the quiz section (p. 59); and access the link (http://www.english-zone.com/home/grammar/adjectives-and-adverbs/) to do sections related to Adjectives of Quantity as well as Comparative Adjectives and Adverbs. (50 minutes時間)
3 Unit-10: Drive On
Students work in pairs to talk about driving and other personal skills.

4 Opinion Speech Practice Session /The Way I See It/ (Group-1)
Students make speeches using the skills of session-1. Speeches mirror the themes of the textbook; and they are followed by brief Q&A using the skills studied in the Spring term.

Students are introduced to expressions related to decision-making.

6 Opinion Speech Practice Session /The Way I See It/ (Group-2)
Students make speeches using the skills of session-1. Speeches mirror the themes of the textbook; and they are followed by brief Q&A using the skills studied in the Spring term.

7 Unit-12: The Dating Game
Students work in groups to discuss interesting encounters and memorable outings.

8 First Progress Evaluation Test and Review
Students take a test to evaluate their individual progress. After the test, students work in groups to review the points they had difficulty with.

Students work in groups to discuss their choices of music and entertainment.

10 Unit-14: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Students hold discussion in small groups on issues related to environmental protection.

11 The Art of Preparing and Delivering a Survey Speech
Students learn how to prepare and deliver a survey speech. The session allows students to practice incorporating survey data into a speech.

【事後学習】Conduct survey using the ideas presented in the opinion speech. (40 minutes時間)
12 Unit-15: The Way Forward
Students practiced talking about their plans in both short and long term.

【事後学習】Do the quiz section (p. 95); and complete the script of the survey speech using the target skills learned in session-11 of this term and the skills of session-8 of the Spring term. (50 minutes時間)
13 Survey Speech Practice Session /The Outside Worldview/ (Group-1)
Students make speeches using the skills of session-11. Speeches mirror the themes of the opinion speech; and they are followed by brief Q&A using the skills studied in the Spring term.

成績評価の方法及び基準 レポート:Assignments and short quizzes(25%)、授業内テスト:Two progress review tests(40%)、授業参画度:Active participation group activities(10%)、Two speech practices (25%)
Report is measured by assignments and short quizzes given throughout the term.
In-class examination is measured by the two evaluation tests in week-8 and week-15.
Participation is measured by the frequency of comments during Q&A sessions.
オフィスアワー In case of face-to-face classes, students are welcome to contact the instructor before or after the class. They can also visit the Teachers' room on Saturdays during lunch time (12:30-12:55). In case of zoom classes, students can contact the instructor by sending an email or setting up an individual zoom session.
