授業の形態 This course takes place online and through zoom. Students are given easy to understand instructions that enable them to follow classes and even work alone, whenever necessary.

授業概要 The primary aim of this course is to enhance students’ communication competency. Language components of the course are speaking, listening and vocabulary acquisition. Students work on these target skills through pair work and short speech practices done individually in small groups. Class activities are conducted in a manner that allows students to connect the discussion of daily issues with the themes of the textbook.

Able to discuss matters of daily interest (school life, family, friends, jobs);
Able to give short, yet structured speeches (opening, development and closing);
Able to express personal views on issues that include lifestyles and preferences;

この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。
授業の方法 演習
The course uses pre-recorded conversations as basis for starting and holding a conversation. Units of the textbook are completed within one class session. Speech practices are designed for reviewing target skills; and mirror the language patterns that are being studied. They are also followed by brief Q&A sessions to maximize the expansion of target skills. Students spend a minimum of 60 minutes per week for preparation and review homework.
履修条件 ①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。
②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、外国語教育センターで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。
③「英語1」(前期)と「英語2」(後期)は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。
④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。
授業計画
1 Reviewing the Basic Elements of English Communication
Students review basic usage of ‘BE’-verb, ‘HAVE’-verb, ‘ACTION’-verb. They are also introduced to the practice of English Q&A.
【事前学習】Print and read through the syllabus of the Spring term. (30 minutes時間)
【事後学習】Prepare a self-introductory speech based on the sample text provided by the instructor; and access the link (http://www.english-zone.com/home/grammar/adjectives-and-adverbs/) to do sections: What is an Adjective; Find the Adjective 01-02; and Sentences with Adjectives. (60 minutes時間)
2 Primary Speech /Introducing Oneself/
Students work in groups to practice introducing themselves. Speeches are followed by Q&A using the skills learned in session-1.

【事後学習】Fill in the speech feedback sheet provided by the instructor and upload to Blackboard room. (40 minutes時間)
3 Unit-1: Getting Along
Students work on key expressions that are used when talking about friendships.

4 Unit-2: Playing to Win
Students practice the usage of sport-related expressions.

5 Unit-3: A Wedding in the Family
Students explore family-related expressions. They also work in groups to simulate planning a wedding event.

6 Unit-4: It Tastes Good
Students practice how to respond to recommendations in the context of food and eatery.

7 Unit-5: Hard Work
Students acquire job-related expressions. They also work in groups to talk ideal jobs and job experiences.

8 Basics of Standard Speech-making
Students are introduced to the basic elements of a standard speech.

9 First Progress Evaluation Test, Review and Commentary
Students take a test to evaluate their individual progress. After the test, students work in groups to review the points they had difficulty with.

10 Unit-6: The Movies
Students are introduced to various ways of discussing preferences.

11 Standard Speech Practice Session /”My Study So Far”/ (Group-1)
Students practice making speeches mirroring the themes of the textbook. Speeches serve as a review of target skills that have been introduced to date and they are followed by Q&A as studied in session-1.

15 Second Progress Evaluation Test, Review and Commentary

This textbook will be used for the entire academic year. Half the book will be studied in the first term and the remaining in the second term.

成績評価の方法及び基準 レポート:Short quizzes and assignments (25%)、授業内テスト:Two progress evaluation tests(40%)、授業参画度:Active participation in group activities(10%)、Two speech practices(25%)
Report is measured by the several short quizzes and assignments throughout the term.
In-class examination is measured by two progress tests in week-9 and week-15.
Participation is measured by work done in small groups and the frequency of comments during Q&A sessions.
オフィスアワー As classes take place online, students can contact the instructor either by sending an email through the course Blackboard room or by setting up a personal zoom session.
備考 The class is fun and students only need to be active.
