授業概要 In this course students will develop English academic skills in reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension, note taking, group discussion , and public speaking. By focusing on lectures in academic areas such as psychology, linguistics, public health, art history, engineering, biology, and so on, students will be able to listen for main ideas presented in lectures , take notes and summarize key information.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students will be expected to learn and master the vocabulary from the Coxhead Academic Word List (AWL). Additionally, students will be able to develop discussion strategies such as asking for and giving opinions, asking for clarification and confirmation, paraphrasing, changing the topic, and reaching a consensus by participating in weekly real time group discussions. Finally, students would be able to develop research techniques by presenting a 5 o 8 minute speech based on a topic from the text. All the skills will be measurable, achievable, and specific to the topics presented in the text .
この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。
授業の方法 The first 5 units of the textbook will be covered this semester. Each unit is designed around an academically themed lecture presented on DVD and will be accessible on line. Each unit includes a variety of academic activities for both vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, note-taking strategies, group discussion, and presentation strategies. The listening activities, note taking activities and vocabulary exercises will be done on line as homework.They can be done at any time before the designated class period. Group discussion activities, speeches and short listening quizzes will be done online via Zoom during the designated class periods.
Students will be expected to prepare 2 to 2.5 hours for these activities before each class period. At the end of each unit, there will also be a short on line unit listening quiz and proficiency assessment test which will be graded. Unit lecture notes and unit vocabulary homework will submitted by the student on line and be assessed and included as part of the student’s grade. Students will also research, organize, practice and perform two 5 to 8-minute speeches based on a topic from the textbook. The objective is to cover all 12 units throughout two semesters, so for the first semester this class will try to cover Units 1 through Unit 5; however, because of the unusual circumstances brought about by the coronavirus, it might not be possible to get through the first 5 units.The teacher will determine if this objective is possible as the course progresses.
履修条件 ①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。
②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、外国語教育センターで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。
③「英語1」（前期）と「英語2」（後期）は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。
④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。
