授業概要 | What is academic writing? Why does it matter? In this course, we learn the fundamentals of academic writing: reading closely to analyze texts and question sources; reasoning with evidence; organizing persuasive and well-structured arguments; and communicating ideas in clear and effective ways. We discuss how the skills required for academic writing can be used far beyond the field of academia, in any career path or even everyday life conversations. |
授業のねらい・到達目標 | Students should acquire self-confidence in expressing their ideas in a clear and rational ways. They should achieve a general understanding of the fundamentals of evidence-based demonstrations by: (1) Learning to compose developed individual paragraphs and essays; (2) Using evidence, sources, and appropriate rhetorical modes to support topic sentences and thesis statements. Ultimately, the goal is to be able to demonstrate critical thinking and reading skills by writing expository paragraphs and essays in response to academic readings. Overall, students should gain knowledge in the art of persuasion and communication. この科目は文理学部のディプロマポリシーDP1及びカリキュラムポリシーCP1に対応しています。 経験や学修から得られた豊かな知識と教養に基づいて,倫理的な課題を理解し説明することができる(A-1-1)。 |
授業の方法 | In this course, we practice short writing assignments in order to learn the fundamental concepts of academic writing. We read academic papers in order to understand how they manage to persuade and win over the readers. We learn how to structure sentences, paragraphs, and whole essays; how to support arguments with examples; how to avoid the many rhetorical mistakes that can weaken an academic essay. Via Blackboard, students have access to reading materials and PowerPoint slides on-demand and need to submit short assignments every week (quizzes and short essays on the reading materials). Mid-term and final essays also need to be submitted via Blackboard. Blackboardを通してオンデマンド教材を配信する(テキストとPowerPointスライド)。受講生はその教材を学修し、所定の方法で課題の解答やエッセイーを提供する。 |
