授業概要	This course is designed to help students to develop their listening, speaking and writing skills. The students will have the opportunity to listen to natural English by newscasters and narrators while watching news programs. The news programs are broadcast by CNN on a variety of topics such as choosing the right college, eating dirt, cardboard bicycles and how to pass a test and so on. They are compact, well designed often humorous full of up to date English expressions dealing with important social activities, cultural phenomena and contemporary themes. Studying these news programs will not only improve English listening and speaking skills, but it will also contribute to intercultural education and expand students knowledge in general.
授業のねらい・到達目標	Students can listen to natural narrations by professional reporters and newscasters. Students will participate in activities designed to improve their listening comprehension and ability to make themselves understood in English news. この科目は文理学部（学士（文学））のディプロマポリシーDP2,DP4,DP5及びカリキュラムポリシーCP5,CP8に対応しています。
授業の方法	All the exercises are designed to help students better understand natural - speed spoken English and to build up their vocabulary of useful words and phrases. In addition to the textbook, I will use supplementary materials to encourage students to communicate effectively. The skill building exercises will be done in class in the form of individual and group work activities. Students are supposed to spend 1 hour to complete preparation and homework on each class.
履修条件	①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。 ②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、外国語教育センターで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。 ③「英語1」（前期）と「英語2」（後期）は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。 ④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。

授業計画
1	Orientation - introduction of the teacher and students.Guidelines for the classes and useful classroom English distributing handouts. 【事前学習】Students check the syllabus online and buy the textbook. 【事後学習】Students write their self introduction using the format given by the instructor.
2	Unit 1 - Choosing the Right College - warm up, vocabulary exercise. topic paragraph, watching the news program on DVD. 【事前学習】Preparation - prepare to answer the warm up questions on page 2. 【事後学習】Post - Watch the BBC news on Channel 3 from 6.30 a.m to 7.30 a.m.
3	Unit 1 continued - after viewing exercises - transcript completion, answering comprehension questions, summary. 【事前学習】Preparation - Read page 6 of Unit 2 and prepare answers for the warm up questions. 【事後学習】Do the summary on page 5 at home.
4	Unit 2 - Eating Dirt - discuss the warm up questions, vocabulary exercise, topic paragraph, watching the news program on DVD. 【事前学習】Preparation - Think of healthy food and eating habits, 【事後学習】Post - Write your impression about eating dirt.
5	Unit 2 continued - discuss the news content, transcript completion, and answering comprehension questions. 【事前学習】Answer the questions on page 7. 【事後学習】Listen and complete the summary on page 9.
6	Unit 3 - Cardboard Bicycles - discuss the warm up questions, vocabulary exercise, watching the news program on DVD. 【事前学習】Try to find answers for warm up questions on page 10. 【事後学習】Answer the comprehension questions on page 11.
7	Unit 3 continued - after viewing exercises - transcript completion, comprehension questions and summary. 【事前学習】Preparation - Answer questions on page 15 about vocabulary in the news. 【事後学習】Do exercise 1 and 2 on page 15.
8	Unit 4 - Goodbye CDs and DVDs - watch the news program while listening. After viewing exercises. 【事前学習】Prepare answers for the warm up questions. 【事後学習】Do the comprehension questions on page 20.
9	Unit 5 - How to Pass a Test - discuss the warm up questions, vocabulary exercise, after viewing exercises, talk about the content of the news with classmates.Example compare the Center Test in Japan and the SAT and find the differences. 【事前学習】Think of the important things to prepare to pass a test. 【事後学習】Write a paragraph about entrance examinations in Japan.
10	Unit 6 - Fashion Week - discuss the warm up questions, vocabulary exercise, watch the news program, transcript completion while watching the news. 【事前学習】Preparation - vocabulary in the news - Crime Exercise 1 and 2 on page 33. 【事後学習】Do the warm up and vocabulary exercises on page 28 at home.
11	Unit 7 - Making Drinks Better - warm up, vocabulary and watching the news program, after viewing exercises. 【事前学習】Find information about the movie to be watched in class next week. 【事後学習】Write what you think will be the important business and cultural differences in Japan and the United States.
12	Watching a movie on business and cultural differences between Japan and the United States of America. Students watch and answer questions about the movie. 【事前学習】Preparation - completion of answers at home using the handout given by the instructor. 【事後学習】Read Unit 8 for the next class.
13	Unit 8 - Women on Submarines - warm up, vocabulary, true/false questions. Viewing the news on DVD and do transcript completion. 【事前学習】Answer the warm up questions on page 40 and vocabulary exercises. 【事後学習】Summarize and write in your notebook the important points in the unit.
14	Unit 9 - Bring People Back to Baseball - warm up, vocabulary, viewing the news on DVD and do transcript completion. 【事前学習】Students review the units covered in class for this semester to ask for clarification. 【事後学習】Students prepare for the final test.
15	Summary and Review. Final test. 【事前学習】Feedback 【事後学習】Students express their opinions about the class and the textbook.
