授業概要	In this class, we will concentrate mainly on developing listening and speaking skills through a wide variety of listening practices and communicative activities. Students will have the opportunity to read and understand inspirational stories from around the world focusing on real life which will motivate them to learn more about the English speaking world. These stories demonstrate to students that even in the face of adversity, such as racial or religious discrimination, political persecution or physical disability they can achieve their goals if they are determined.
授業のねらい・到達目標	The objective of this course is for students to improve their ability to understand and communicate fluently with English speakers. The students will master the vocabulary and sentence structure necessary for them to be able to communicate effectively. この科目は文理学部（学士（文学））のディプロマポリシーDP2,DP4,DP5及びカリキュラムポリシーCP5,CP8に対応しています。
授業の方法	In this class, we will brush up our speaking and listening skills through a wide variety of listening practices and communicative activities through the use of teaching aids. Class work will consist of individual, group and pair work activities. Students are supposed to spend 1 hour to complete preparation and homework on each class.
履修条件	①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。 ②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、外国語教育センターで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。 ③「英語1」（前期）と「英語2」（後期）は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。 ④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。

授業計画
1	Orientation - introduction of the teacher and the students. Discussion of the syllabus. Guidelines for the classes and useful classroom English using handouts. 【事前学習】Students read the online syllabus and buy the textbook. 【事後学習】Students write their self introduction using the format given by the instructor.
2	Chapter 1 - Phone Salesman Becomes Opera Singer - background quiz, reading, vocabulary build-up. 【事前学習】Preparation - Reading comprehension on page 6. 【事後学習】Answering the questions on word forms on page 7.
3	Chapter 1 continued - word forms, story line reproduction, utilizing useful words and phrases, dialog completion and practice with a partner. 【事前学習】Preparation - Reading Chapter 2 reading passage. 【事後学習】Summarize the important points in your notebook.
4	Chapter 2 - Sportsman's Wish Comes True - background quiz, reading the passage, vocabulary build up, reading comprehension. 【事前学習】Preparation - Word forms on page 11 for homework. 【事後学習】Answering questions on utilizing useful words and phrases on page 8.
5	Chapter 2 continued - story line reproduction, dialogue completion and practice with a partner. 【事前学習】Preparation - Reading passage on page 14. 【事後学習】Summarize the important points in the reading passage.
6	Chapter 3 - Fashion Model and UN Special Ambassador - background quiz, reading the passage, vocabulary build up and reading comprehension. 【事前学習】Preparation - Follow up exercises on page 15 for homework. 【事後学習】Homework on page 15.
7	Chapter 3 continued - story line reproduction, utilizing useful words and phrases, dialog completion and practice. 【事前学習】Preparation - Answer the questions on page 17 for homework. 【事後学習】Read the reading passage on page 18.
8	Chapter 4 - Never, Ever, Ever Give up! - background quiz, reading passage, reading comprehension and vocabulary build up. 【事前学習】Preparation - Do word forms on page 19 for homework. 【事後学習】Do an search on the Internet to find active disabled people in Japan.
9	Chapter 4 continued - story line reproduction, utilizing useful words and phrases, listening activity and practice the dialog. 【事前学習】Preparation - Read the passage on page 22. 【事後学習】Summarize the important points in the reading passage in your notebook.
10	Watch a movie and write your impression about the movie. 【事前学習】Preparation - Read the review of the movie before watching it in class. 【事後学習】Complete writing the review/impression about the movie.
11	Chapter 5 - A Man with an Iron Will - background quiz, reading passage, reading comprehension and vocabulary build up. 【事前学習】Preparation - Do word forms on page 23. 【事後学習】Answering the questions on page 24.
12	Chapter 5 continued - Completion of dialog and practice it. 【事前学習】Preparation - Chapter 6 reading passage on page 26 【事後学習】Review the important points studied in class today.
13	Chapter 6 - Mottainai, the Slogan of Ecology - background quiz, reading passage and comprehension, vocabulary build up. 【事前学習】Preparation - Do word forms on page 27 for homework. 【事後学習】Summarize the important points in the reading passage.
14	Chapter 6 continued - listen and fill in the blanks in the dialog and practice it with the partner. 【事前学習】Preparation - review the chapters covered in this semester for the final test. 【事後学習】Ask the teacher for clarification about the test.
15	Wrap up and review. Final test. 【事前学習】Students express their opinions about the class. 【事後学習】Do summer homework.

参考書	Never mind making mistakes in class. You will gain a great sense of accomplishment through this challenging but enjoyable course. The above class schedule and speed will be adjusted depending on the students' performance in class.
成績評価の方法及び基準	授業内テスト(80%)、授業参画度(20%) Students are required to spend at least an hour per week studying the textbook, class materials and listen to the CD in order to prepare for the next class, and also review materials studied in previous class. Students are required to bring an English-English Dictionary and a notebook to class. Students’ participation will be measured by attitude.
