授業概要	This course examines pieces on Japanese culture as compared with Western culture, written by three authors, one by a prominent Japanese academic in the Meiji Era, the secon by an American scholar in the postwar days, and the thired ny a British journalist in the 21st century.
授業のねらい・到達目標	This course should enable students to rethink characteristics of Japanese society as compared with Western society and provide them with opportunities to objectively view various aspects of Japanese society. この科目は文理学部（学士（文学））のディプロマポリシーDP2，DP4，DP5及びカリキュラムポリシーCP5，CP8に対応しています。
授業の方法	Mostly lecture, with studens' active participation in the class in the forms of presentation and discussion encouraged. Students should spend 2 hours each to complete their preparation and homework.
