授業概要	The primary goal of this course is to introduce and further develop the skills necessary for academic discourse in discussions and presentations. With a combined content and skills-based syllabus, the course provides students with the opportunity to improve discussion skills, presentation skills and critical thinking skills. Additionally, through the activity of reading and researching the topics from this course, students will deepen their awareness on issues of significant global and national importance.
授業のねらい・到達目標	By the end of this course, students will be able to actively participate in small academic discussions on various global issues, which will be held in groups of three or four people and will be 10 to 15 minutes in length. They will also be able to use the necessary topic vocabulary as well as a variety of discourse functions such as: leading a discussion, reacting to other people opinions (through either agreeing or disagreeing), checking their comprehension and taking the floor by interrupting. In addition to these skills, they will be able to develop their reading skill as they read short introductory readings to each topic and answer comprehension questions. They will also be able to develop their vocabulary skills as they study various vocabulary learning strategies such as collocation and phrase building. この科目は文理学部（学士（文学））のディプロマポリシーDP2,DP4,DP5及びカリキュラムポリシーCP5, CP8に対応しています。
授業の方法	The students are expected to work both individually and in small groups to complete the various tasks outlined. During the semester, students will be expected to complete vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises every week. They will also be expected to collaboratively complete various discussion tasks that are designed to familiarise them with the necessary functions. After class, they will be expected to write a short reflection on their performance as well as do the required preparation for the next lesson. Every four weeks we will have a discussion and a vocabulary test. In the discussion test, students will be in groups of three or four and will discuss the questions from the three units and be expected to share their opinions while reacting to others. Students are also expected to show that they can use the discussion functions of the previous three units. In the vocabulary test, they will be tested on the vocabulary and phrases from those units (18 words plus phrases). They will have 10 minutes to complete the test. Although most of the test items will be gap-fill, other test items may be used e.g. multiple choice, sorting into tables etc. After every discussion test, students are expected to complete a self-evaluative report on their performance in the discussion test. In this report they are expected to assess their performance in the test, identify their strengths and offer solutions to overcome their weaknesses. This report will be assessed by its completeness. Students are supposed to spend 1 hour to complete preparation and homework on each class.
履修条件	①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。 ②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、外国語教育センターで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。 ③「英語1」（前期）と「英語2」（後期）は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。 ④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。

備考	For this class, the students will be required to prepare for each lesson by completing the required vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises. They will also be asked to prepare for the in-class discussion by making a note of their answers for the warm-up and discussion exercises.
