授業のねらい・到達目標 | In this semester, the analysis of a major theme in Western culture, carpe diem (Latin for “seize the day”), coined by the Roman poet Horace, and its popularity throughout history will be the main goal. The reception of this idea in American culture will be the focus, particularly within Henry James’s “Daisy Miller,” Edith Wharton’s “Roman Fever,” and the movie Dead Poets Society. From ancient poetry through modern prose to film, then, students will be able to trace the evolution and versatility of the carpe diem leitmotif as it appears in such different media and genre. |
授業の方法 | Regular homework will ensure proper preparation for each class, while retention of all the material covered will be evaluated via frequent quizzes. |
事前学修・事後学修,授業計画コメント | Students will also be required to write an essay based on the carpe diem theme. |
