授業のねらい・到達目標 | To introduce utopia/dystopia; to enhance understanding of the limits of knowledge, how it can be used for good and ill; improving abilities in reading and interpreting complex texts in English, participating in discussions, and in writing essays. |
授業の方法 | Continuing our explorations of the relationship between knowledge, power, and humanity, this semester will look more closely at the impact of science and technology through the novel Brave New World and the film Dr. Strangelove. Published in 1931, Brave New World by English writer Aldous Huxley is one of modern English literature’s most famous examples of a dystopian novel. A dystopia, or “negative utopia,” is a vision of a world in which ideas and plans for a perfect society go terribly wrong. The novel tells the story of how a technologically advanced future society robs individuals of their humanity, and of how one character seeks to regain his. We will pay attention to what the novel says about modernity, and whether or not it makes relevant statements about our present time. Then we will screen Dr. Strangelove by director Stanley Kubrick. The film tells the story of how normal people, simply by rationally following instructions, carry out a nuclear attack. |
