授業テーマ Knowledge, Power, and Humanity
授業のねらい・到達目標 To introduce the myth of Prometheus, ideas of modernity, science fiction, and romanticism; improving abilities in reading and interpreting complex texts in English, participating in discussions, and in writing essays.
授業の方法 In this seminar, we will explore human limits and potentials in relation to knowledge, and the power gained from knowledge. First, we will be read the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus, a story of a god who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humans, along with other knowledge and technology. For this, he was punished. Second, we will read a version of the Prometheus myth, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. It tells the story of Doctor Victor Frankenstein, who creates a living being, a ‘monster’ of horrific strength and ugliness. Disgusted at his actions, Frankenstein flees, and the monster is left to roam Europe in search of both his creator and redemption. The novel blends the Promethean themes of the dangers of knowledge, the power of nature, and what it means to be human. It is also considered the first science fiction novel, and in its investigations of the limits of human knowledge, introduces many of the problems that shaped a rapidly modernizing Europe in the early nineteenth century.
