授業テーマ Individual oral presentations by groups with introduction of group communicative skills.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students will practice basic presentation techniques, skills, and speech composition.
授業の方法 Students will form groups of three or four for discussion, preparation, and presentation. One week will consist of introduction of topic, techniques, and to the extent necessary, vocabulary items. Groups will discuss what and how to present. The next week will consist of each group making their presentation. Group members should be prepared to stay in contact with their fellow members.
履修条件 Only those conditions specified by the University.
事前学修・事後学修,授業計画コメント This syllabus will also be given out as a handout which will be reviewed, explained, and commented the first day of class. This will not be repeated in the second semester, so any new students should download this syllabus and, if there are any questions, ask their fellow classmates. I will take any unanswered questions.
授業計画
1 Preparation: study pages 3, 7-12, and 91-94 of text.
A hard copy of this syllabus will be distributed in class, the English will be explained when necessary, and all points reviewed. Introduction to the topic of informative presentations of time with points to keep in mind about differences between translation and composition for speech. Formation of groups. Group discussion on how to compose and deliver presentation.
Review: keep in contact with group members about presentation.
2 Preparation: review and polish points for presentation.
Each group will come to the front of the class and present their topic of time. Students will take notes to be handed in of each group’s presentation. Teacher evaluation will follow.
Review: read text, pages 13-18.
3 Preparation: study pages 13-18 of text.
Further comments on previous performances that should be kept in mind for next presentation. Introduction of informative topic, place presentations. Group discussion on how to compose and deliver presentation.
Review: keep in contact with group members about presentation.
4 Preparation: review and polish points for presentation.
Each group will come to the front of the class and present their topic of place. Students will take notes to be handed in of each group’s presentation.Teacher evaluation will follow.
Review: read text, pages 19-24 and handout distributed in class.
5 Preparation: study pages 19-24 of text and handout distributed in class.
The topic of “The Four Basic Food Groups” will not be taken up. Instead, topics may be chosen from suggestions of informative topical patterns in handouts, or, upon consultation with teacher may be formulated by group. Group discussion on how to compose and deliver presentation.

Introduction of informative topic, concept presentations. Group discussion on how to compose and deliver presentation.

10 Preparation: review and polish points for presentation.
Each group will come to the front of the class and present their concept topic. Students will take notes to be handed in of each group’s presentation. Teacher evaluation will follow.
Review: read text, pages 37-42.
11 Preparation: study pages 37-42 of text.
Introduction of informative topic, advantages and disadvantages presentations. Group discussion on how to compose and deliver presentation.
Review: keep in contact with group members about presentation
12 Preparation: review and polish points for presentation.
Each group will come to the front of the class and present their advantages and disadvantages topic. Students will take notes to be handed in of each group’s presentation. Teacher evaluation will follow.

13 Preparation: study pages 43-48 of text.
Introduction of topic of persuasive presentations, and the fierst topic, questions of value presentations. Group discussion on how to compose and deliver presentation. Although this is a new form of presentation, groups will have extra time to prepare.

Each group will come to the front of the class and present their persuasive presentations on the topic of questions of value. Students will take notes to be handed in of each group’s presentation. Teacher evaluation will follow.

教科書 Yoshihito Sugita and Richard Caraker, Writing for Presentation in English, writing as such will not be emphasized, but rather stress will be placed on writing pieces that each individual, Nan’un-do, 2013, 1 edition
参考書 None assigned but students are encouraged to always measure the extent of their knowledge and understanding, and use hard-copy dictionaries and reference books for their own needs.
成績評価の方法及び基準 平常点(25%)、授業参画度(25%)、As described below, in addition, attendance, 25%(25%)、As described below, in addition, improvement, 25%(25%)
Class work (25%), class participation (25%), effort shown in each class (25%), improvement in work or effort throughout the semester (25%). Attendance and conduct in class will amount to 50% of semester evaluation. The other 50% will be based on work and conduct in each class and overall improvement of same throughout the semester.
オフィスアワー I do not have an office. I will be available in the teachers lounge before 4th period on Thursdays and before 1st period on Fridays, as well as between and after classes in the classroom on both days.
備考 This class will be focused upon on making various forms of presentations. Language as such will not be emphasized, but depending on need may be reviewed.
