授業テーマ This course will introduce students to the ETHNOGRAPHY OF JAPANESE LIFESTYLE. Classes will cover social meanings cultural values that are familiar to the everyday life of contemporary Japanese. Students are expected to comprehend and analyze prominent cultural values, social mechanisms, and historical processes that structure and characterize contemporary Japanese life. Students will explore questions such as: What makes Japan con-temporary? What socio-historical backdrops and cultural processes set the stage? What geopolitical problems are Japanese people facing today, and why? In the process of these explorations, methods and techniques of sociocultural research will be acquired.
授業のねらい・到達目標 THIS COURSE IS OPEN TO JAPANESE STUDENTS who wish to experience the atmosphere of equivalent coursework in Western universities, and thereby motivate themselves toward developing their communicative skills in academic English!

1) To experience coursework- and classroom-atmosphere in American and English universities
2) To enhance students' understanding of contemporary Japanese culture and society
3) To acquire skills in sociocultural research
4) To brush up one's communicative skills in English language
授業の方法 1) A series of lectures to enhance listening skills
2) Discussions to enhance argumentative skills
3) Referential assignments to enhance skills in reading and meaningful comprehension
4) Presentations to enhance expressive skills
履修条件 No specific background in social science is required in advance, but students must be willing to learn in and from the class. Personal efforts and achievements are highly evaluated -let alone attentiveness!
事前学修・事後学修,授業計画コメント Group project will be given after a series of lectures. Students should be ready to work outside of the class as well. Project workshops will be provided in order to get a good sense of how to integrate what one learned through different approaches of subject acquisition in class.
