授業テーマ	The purpose of this course is to take the student from writing paragraphs to writing academic style essays. After a review of basic paragraph structure we will move on to multi-paragraph academic essays.
授業のねらい・到達目標	Academic writing involves a different set of skills from texting, email writing, note taking, letter writing or other forms of daily writing. By learning about what constitutes a good paragraph in English, and then compiling good paragraphs into good essays, students will learn to write papers that acceptable at the university level. Along the way, we will start to add vocabulary and rhetorical devices that are found in academic English. The classes will consist of mini-lectures and writing sessions (in-class timed writings) and out of class assignments and writings.
授業の方法	Students must be familiar with and be able to produce basic sentence types and have an understanding of English grammar patterns. Moderate proficiency in keyboarding is helpful as is a knowledge of Microsoft Word (English).

2	Organization of a comparison essay; working with the language of a comparison essay.
3	Vocabulary building; original comparison essay. Paraphrasing and summarizing Timed writing.
4	Cause-effect essays; organization of a cause-effect essay.
5	Language of a cause-effect essay. Paraphrasing and summarizing Student writing.
6	Original student essay--cause-effect.
7	Classification essays--choosing a topic Paraphrasing and summarizing Timed writing.
8	The language of a classification essay.
9	Original student writing--classification essay Paraphrasing and summarizing
10	Additonal topics for writing. Student writing.
11	Writer's handbook activities; examination of US online writing labs. Paraphrasing and summarizing
12	Review of the seven steps of the writing process. Paraphrasing and summarizing
13	Final Test and/or final paper
14	Online discussion; rough draft of final paper
15	Editing of final paper. Final assignment grading check via BB9.

成績評価の方法及び基準	平常点(20%)、レポート(20%)、Online blogs, exercises, assignments, group work, journals and discussions,. (30%)、Final Paper(30%) Students who are repeatedly late or excessively absent will not receive a grade.

備考	Parts of the class will be held via Blackboard--an interactive teaching tool provided by CHS. Students need to know how access the campus internet to participate in blogs, homework assignments, and online discussions. Permission to access the campus internet is issued through the computer center. There is no monetary outlay required by the students. Students can access BB9 from home or on campus via their computers. Terminals around the campus can also access BB9.
